Semiconductor equipment supplier Novellus Systems developing ALD process for solar cells

Semiconductor equipment supplier, Novellus Systems is developing what it describes as conformal film deposition (CFD) technology, an atomic layer deposition process to grow conformal metal oxide and metal nitride dipole layers in the PV cells. Collaboration is being undertaken with the University of South Florida (USF), to study the precise engineering of solar cell interfaces via a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Read more

Soitec supplies Concentrix technology for 3MW CPV project in China

Soitec (Euronext) has completed the first delivery of its Concentrix concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems to a Chinese client. Imec and partners reveal small area ?IBC? Si solar cell with 23% plus efficiency

Pushing the boundaries of conventional silicon solar cell technology, while offering a low-cost production approach, took another step forward, according to R&D organisation, imec. In conjunction with its industrial affiliates, researchers have developed a small-area (2x2 cm2) - interdigitated back-contact (IBC) silicon solar cells that has demonstrated a conversion efficiency of 23.3%. Work will now focus on developing a large-area and production viable cell and process steps. Read more

Canadian Solar modules chosen for 8.8MW OPDE project

Concentrating photovoltaics in China: Soitec begins shipping Concentrix systems for 3 MW plant in Xinjiang

On November 30th, 2011 Soitec SA (Bernin, France) announced that it has shipped an initial order of Concentrix concentrating solar photovoltaic (CPV) systems to Focusic (China) New Energy Holding Company Ltd. as part of a partnership agreement between the companies. The Concentrix systems will be used to build a 3 MW CPV plant in the city of Hami in China's Xinjiang province. Read more

India?s National Solar Mission to close second round of bidding for first phase of project

The Hindu Business Line advised that projects for Batch-II of the first phase of the National Solar Mission will be closing on Friday with various solar power developers bidding for projects in the 350MW capacity. The news outlet points out that in Batch-I, the names of the successful bidders were immediately announced, however, it is unclear if the same protocol will be followed in this round. The bidding process is handled by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), a unit of NTPC, which was nominated by the government to oversee the first phase of the Solar Mission. Read more

Solar Park Germany 2011 continues to drive investor interest

Interest in Solar Park Germany 2011 is continuing strongly according to Green City Energy. Around 180 investors have subscribed for more than 70% of the shares, with a majority of the remaining interest already pre-booked. Solar Park Germany 2011meets the conditions for EEG participation and will develop three solar pants in Bavaria and Thuringia with a forecast yield of 61.5% from a combined 6.4MW capacity. Read more

PVNavigator, County of San Bernardino enter lease option to build 5MW solar array at former landfill

PVNavigator, part of Project Navigator, has signed a lease option agreement with the County of San Bernardino to assess and explore the development of a 5MW PV facility at the former Milliken Sanitary Landfill in Ontario, PV Magazine reports. Power from the facility is anticipated to be sold to either Southern California Edison and/or the Ontario Airport so that each entity can come closer to reaching their renewable energy portfolio goals. JA Solar buys Chinese monocrystalline wafer supplier Solar Silicon Valley

According to Bloomberg, JA Solar Holdings advised that it had issued 30.9 million ordinary shares in order to buy Chinese monocrystalline wafer supplier Solar Silicon Valley Electronic Science and Technology. SolarWorld?s 11.6MW LA solar system takes shape

As a result, its ThinFab (120MWp) lines going into full production by end of 2012 can reduce module production costs by up to 5 %. The total gas budget was said to be less than ?8.50 per panel. The Swiss Bank Sarasin recently published the 12th edition of their solar industry report, covering all three solar technologies: solar heating and cooling (ST), photovoltaics (PV), and concentrating solar power (CSP). The chapter on solar heating and cooling identifies great differences in the market development of national markets and regions: While the Chinese solar thermal market continues to shine, many European countries are suffering from decreasing or stagnating markets. SolarCity, Bank of America to move forward with SolarStrong

On November 30th, 2011 SolarCity Corporation (San Mateo, California, U.S.) and Bank of America Merrill Lynch (New York, New York, U.S.) announced that they have agreed to terms of financing for SolarCity's SolarStrong project, which aims to build up to 300 MW of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plants at military bases in the United States over the next five years. The announcement marks the resurrection of a project thought to be dead when the companies were unable to finalize a loan guarantee through the U.S. Department of Energy for the project in September 2011. Morgan Solar acquires USD 9.8 million investment from Enbridge, closes B round

On November 29th, 2011 Morgan Solar Inc. (Toronto, Canada) announced that it has secured a USD 9.8 million investment from Enbridge Inc. (Calgary, Canada). This investment has allowed Morgan Solar to close its B round of financing at USD 28.8 million. Morgan Solar had originally intended to raise between USD 20 and 25 million in the round. The company states that the investment is a validation of the value offered by its Sun Simba turnkey solar generation solution. Read more
