Suntech honors DuPont with Supplier Excellence Award

At Suntech Power Holdings? recent Global Supplier Conference, the company recognized 19 companies with its award ceremony, one of them being DuPont, which was honored for its supply and technical service as well as its product innovation and collaboration. On November 28th, 2011 imec (Leuven, Belgium) and Kaneka Corporation (Osaka, Japan) presented silver-free heterojunction silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) cells at the 21st International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference in Fukuoka, Japan. The organizations report achieving a conversion efficiency greater than 21% on 152 mm silicon substrates with an electroplated copper contact grid on top of a transparent conductive oxide layer. Kaneka states that its results were obtained by applying its copper electroplating technology, which is based on imec technology. On November 29th, 2011 Q-Cells SE (Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany) announced that its subsidiary Solibro GmbH has achieved a 17.4% aperture area efficiency with a copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar photovoltaic (PV) module, as verified by Fraunhofer ISE (Freiburg, Germany). The new efficiency is a world record both for CIGS and for thin-film PV technology overall. Q-Cells also states that the 16 square centimeter test module was fabricated using processes which are fully scalable to cost-effective mass production. The project is said to have a US$700 million price tag and will be the company?s second solar farm. Gemma Renewable Power (GRP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gemma Power Systems, which is a subsidiary of Argan, advised that it had executed a US$16.6 million EPC contract with Southern Sky Renewable Energy Canton for the design and construction of a 5.7MW solar project. The installation, which will be built on a closed capped landfill in Canton, Massachusetts, will feature 19,800 PV panels across 12.5 acres. GRP has already received a full release to start construction and engineering activities and aims to have the projected completed by the summer of 2012. On November 28th, 2011 BrightSource Energy Inc. (Oakland, California, U.S.) announced that it has added thermal storage to three power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Southern California Edison Company (SCE, Rosemead, California, U.S.) for the sale of electricity from concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. BrightSource notes that by adding storage to its CSP plants, it is able to further reduce the total cost of energy by increasing its capacity factor. Under the new agreements, which will go before the California Public Utilities Commission for approval, the company will supply power from six CSP plants instead of seven, as previously planned. KG (Eberswalde, Germany) announced that it developed a solar photovoltaic (PV) subsurface pump system that can be used for supplying clean water in disaster regions and in areas far away from the public water system. The system is available in four performance classes on the basis of six pump types. Depending on the performance class, the system can deliver up to 6,600 liters of groundwater per hour at depths of between 15 and 100 meters. On June 13th, 2012 Intersolar Europe - the world's largest exhibition for the solar industry ? once again opens its doors at the Munich New Trade Fair Centre in Germany. Exhibitor registrations are already flooding in and the preparations are in full swing, the organizer Solar Promotion (Pforzheim, Germany) reports in a press release. A total of 180,000 square meters are available for an expected 2,400 exhibitors, which corresponds to another 6% growth over the previous year. On November 29th, 2011 Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC, Sandvika, Norway) announced that it will initiate a process with trade unions to reduce 60% of the output of its 650 MW multicrystalline wafer manufacturing facility in Herøya, Norway through the first quarter of 2012. The company cites ongoing macroeconomic impacts on the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry, estimating that prices for wafers have fallen 30% since October 1st, 2011, and noting that its inventories are increasing.
