Schott?s multicrystalline solar cells using metal contacts reach 18% efficiency

Schott Solar announced, along with its partners, that after six months it had reached an 18% efficiency measurement for its metallized copper solar cell. Featuring a multicrystalline wafer base with a screen-printed standard backside, the research project, taking place in Las Vegas, aims to have the standard silver contact replaced on the front side of solar cells by a cheaper nickel-copper-plating. Schott noted that this allows for the production costs for the front-side of the cell to be cut by more than half. Read more

Azur Space, Fraunhofer ISE continue partnership for III-V solar cells for applications in space

Fraunhofer ISE and Azur Space Solar Power advised that the 15 year partnership for the creation of multi-junction solar cells using III-V semiconductors has been extended for another 20 years by the signing of an agreement of cooperation. Fraunhofer and Azur Space plan to work together over the next two decades to create solar cells that will be used for applications based in space. Read more

German health resort powered by the sun; 1.1 MWp PV plant to be ready for operation by the end of this year

Bad Salzungen, a health resort in the federal state of Thuringia/Germany, has ambitious plans: a 1.1 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) power park, to be installed and ready for operation by the end of this year. The ground-breaking ceremony on the premises of a former landfill took place on Nov 18th, 2011. SEMI introduces new standard for shipping PV modules

On November 15th, 2011, SEMI (Taipei, Taiwan) announced that it introduced new standard for shipping photovoltaic modules. The company released the publication of "SEMI PV23-1011? Test Method for Mechanical Vibration of c-Si Photovoltaic (PV) Modules In Shipping Environment." The new SEMI Standard, which can reduce costs related to damage incurred during the transportation of PV modules, was primarily authored by the SEMI Taiwan PV Standards Committee, and vetted by the global SEMI PV Standards Committee, which consists of over 450 members, representing over 200 companies in every major PV manufacturing region. U.S. State of Virginia authorizes charges for owners of PV plants larger than 10 kW

Any residential customer of Dominion Virginia Power who owns and operates certain net-metered electric generation systems of 10 kilowatts or larger will pay a monthly standby charge as authorized by state law during the 2011 session of the General Assembly. The State Corporation Commission (SCC) has approved a standby charge methodology that allows the company to recover its transmission and distribution costs since those customers and operators of i.e. solar photovoltaic (PV) systems still make use of electric grid. PV micro-inverter producer Enphase raises USD 21.9 million in new funding

According to a November 17th, 2011 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Enphase Energy Inc. (Petaluma, California, U.S.) has raised USD 21.9 in new funding out of a goal of USD 81.9 million. Enphase, the world's largest maker of micro-inverters to accompany solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, continues to rely on private investments despite filing for an initial public offering in June 2011. Chinese manufacturer to bundle Sustainable Energy inverters with PV modules

On November 23rd, 2011 Sustainable Energy Technologies Ltd. (Toronto, Canada) announced that it has reached an agreement with an un-named Chinese solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturer to bundle its PARALEX inverters with high-efficiency PV modules for distribution to U.S. PV installers. Under the non-exclusive agreement, Sustainable Energy will also help market the bundled package, as well as providing system design and technical support. Read more

Fraunhofer ISE confirms 19.9% efficiency on Schott Solar?s new Quasimono wafer

Schott Solar advised that its newly developed Quasimono wafer reached 19.9% efficiency measurement, which was confirmed by Fraunhofer ISE. The Quasimono wafer is produced using a new technique in the manufacturing of the full-square wafers that are said to contain a high monocrystalline share. Schott noted that it had achieved its wafer using a modified conventional VGF process, which is more commonly used to manufacture polycrystalline wafers. The 19.9% efficiency performance is expected to help Schott make further strides in its planned Schott Perform Mono solar module debut in 2012. Read more

Panasonic to build 300MW PV manufacturing plant in Malaysia
