OPV and DSC markets to be worth US$1.3 billion by 2017, claim NanoMarkets

NanoMarkets has published a new report claiming that novel encapsulation and substrate materials are the key to the long-term survival of organic photovoltaics (OPV) and dye-sensitized cell (DSC) photovoltaics. The report, titled ?Encapsulation and Flexible Substrates for Organic and Dye-Sensitized Photovoltaics?, predicts that a US$1.3 billion encapsulation and substrate market will be possible by 2017, if manufacturers of these materials can offer products that will facilitate use of OPV and DSC technology into the building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) sector. TerniEnergia exceeds 2010 target, completes 76 plants totalling 77.2MWp

TerniEnergia has completed the construction of 31 industrial sized photovoltaic plants, together totalling 33.3MWp. A sum of 4.4MWp was developed for Joint Venture?s power generation business, with the remaining built on behalf of third parties. The new plants are located in Sardegna, Umbria, Lazio, Puglia, Piemonte, Abruzzo, Veneto, Toscana e Campania regions. Read more

Peabody to install solar panels on London social housing

First Solar teams up with Guangdong Nuclear to build Ordos facility

Industry behemoth First Solar has enlisted the help of the state-owned China Guangdong Nuclear Solar Energy Development (CGN SEDC) for the first phase of its 30MW plant in Ordos, Mongolia. Work on the project, which was originally scheduled to commence in June, was delayed when the Chinese government failed to pass legislation on preferential tariff rates for solar-generated electricity and First Solar hope the involvement of a Chinese firm will help facilitate the early stages of construction. Lumeta successfully completes first commercial U.S. installation of PowerPly PV module in Arizona

The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona, is the newly sporting the PowerPly PV solar system, courtesy of Lumeta. The MIM project is the first U.S. commercial installation of the roof-integrated PowerPly PV module, which, along with the cells that go in the module, is manufactured by Suntech Power Holdings. Silicon Solar bestowed with NSF SBIR grant

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has chosen Silicon Solar Solutions as the recipient of a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant. The SBIR grant will allow Silicon Solar Solutions to more fully develop their TAIC process for the creation of thin-film in solar cells. The company?s TAIC process develops a thin-film of large grain polysilicon by crystallizing amorphous silicon. Silicon Solar Solutions claims that this allows for the grains to be created not only ninety times bigger than more customary methods, but in a more efficient time frame as well. Read more

Ceradyne secures acquisition of VIOX

Ceradyne has completed its acquisition of VIOX, a specialty glass company based in Seattle, Washington. Over the past few years VIOX has seen around 70% of its sales come from its solar glass products, which have been specialty formulated for polycrystalline silicon solar PV applications. Ceradyne bought VIOX through US$27 million in cash paid at closing, which also includes a post closing adjustment in two months. Additionally, conditional payment of up to US$22 million may be paid if VIOX reaches certain sales diversification and earnings targets over a 30-month period after the closing. Read more
