Market disconnect over German PV installs for 2011

The news that the German feed-in tariff rate cut for 2011 is to be 13% and just that is a strong signal that PV installations should remain strong next year. Indeed, the very fact that there is no cap or structural changes to the EEG as was seen mid-year is also a boon to the industry, as it kills any fear, uncertainty or doubt (FUD) about the most important market for the PV industry. Project Focus: Ameresco chosen for US$6.6 million solar project for VA center in Salt Lake City

Ameresco was chosen by the Department of Veterans Affairs to build a renewable energy project at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ameresco will design and build the solar PV system, which holds a valued coast at over US$6.6 million. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) approved the initial environment documents mandated by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) this week, paving the path for the city’s largest solar PV array to be built. The 5MW solar PV installation, labeled the Van Normam Bypass Reservoir Solar Project, is set to be built on the covered reservoir in Granada Hills at an estimated US$15.3 million. Read more

Brookhaven, Los Alamos research finds transparent nanofilms for possible solar window

Research at the U.S Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and Los Alamos national laboratory has identified transparent thin-films, which claim to be able to absorb light and produce an electric charge over a comparably large area. The material has been described in the journal, Chemistry of Materials, by scientists from the laboratory as having the potential ability to be used in the production of transparent solar panels or windows, which would take in the solar energy and convert it to usable electricity.
