Of the five key components of the crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaics supply chain -- polysilicon, wafer, cell, module, and inverter -- many PV companies in Taiwan have set their sights on the high-value-add cell manufacturing. These companies have installed production capacity of 60-100MW or more, and have well-defined ramp up plans to bring more on-line in the next year, by adding to existing lines or building new facilities. Nanoco Group receives payment from Tokyo Electron after achieving nanomaterial thin-film milestone

After Nanoco successfully created and supplied a tailored solar ink under its agreement with Tokyo Electron, Tokyo Electron issued an additional, yet undisclosed, payment to Nanoco. The solar ink has been used to make a nanomaterial thin-film for the production of solar cells and is one step in the nine-month development phase of the agreement between the two companies to improve solar power efficiency. Evergreen solar posts 7.2% increase in shipments for third quarter; expects 4Q shipment of 48MW

Evergreen Solar has posted its third quarter results for the period ending October 2, 2010. Overall the company saw an increase in shipments for the quarter from 39.8MW in quarter two to 42.6MW. The 7.2% growth in its shipments has led the company to speculate that the fourth quarter can total shipments of 48MW. Read more

RMT Canada to begin renewable energy construction services for wind and solar facilities

Dow Chemical?s Powerhouse shingle receives UL safety certification

The Dow Powerhouse solar shingle, manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company, has received Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety certification after passing over 50 individual tests to measure its safety and building standards. UL testing included wind and fire resistance testing as well as validating proper wiring and PV connection.  The Dow Powerhouse shingle achieved UL 746, 1703, 1897, 790, 486 and 514. Read more

First Reserve closes funding for Rovigo solar plant

First Reserve has closed its financial facilities agreement for the Rovigo solar plant at €276 million. The private equity firm bought the 70MW PV plant from Sun Edison, with whom they had previously established a joint venture, this past September. Banco Santander, Unicredit Corporate Banking, Credit Agricole, Dexia Crediop, Natixis and Societe Generale were additional lenders with First Reserve for the financing agreement. Read more

SolarBridge selects Celestica to manufacture Pantheon microinverter

European Commission supplies funding for Oerlikon Solar?s project Pepper

Oerlikon Solar's €16.7 million research project "Pepper" is to receive a €9.4 million funding grant under the Framework Programme for Research of the European Union, coordinated by the DG Energy of the European Commission. The project, which begun on September 1 this year, is aimed at demonstrating high performance processes and equipment for thin-film silicon photovoltaics modules produced with lower costs, reduced material use, and an even improved environmental-friendly production process. Jinko Solar highlights US$215 million revenue for 2010?s Q3; expects to reach US$220 million

Jinko Solar Holdings released its third-quarter financial results for 2010, citing an overall increase in revenue and solar shipments. Total revenue in the third quarter hit US$215 million; a 59.7% increase from this year’s second quarter, which had a revenue of US$134.56 million. Company officials referred to the escalation in the solar module sale volume and a larger average selling price (ASP) of the modules as contributors to higher revenue for the quarter. Read more

Silfab Ontario contracts SCC Solar for engineering and additional services on new Canadian plant

SCC Solar Energy Group (SCC Solar) has agreed to provide program and engineering construction management for Silfab Ontario’s soon to be constructed solar module manufacturing plant. Silfab’s plant in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, will start its first production phase at the beginning of 2011. Working with Green to Green Engineering (G2G), who will take care of the module production line design and process,  SCC  will provide the program control and engineering for the construction, utilities and other services the project necessitates. MEMC sees increased sales as wafer prices rise: SunEdison project pipeline tops 1GW

MEMC Electronic Materials reported a 31% sequential increase in solar materials sales, primarily from wafers in its third quarter results. A 20% increase in shipments and modest improvement in wafer ASP’s helped sales for the group reach sales of US$503.1 million, up 12.2% from US$448.3 million in the second quarter of 2010. Its subsidiary, SunEdison reported sales of US$21.5 million but has 1,023MW in its project pipeline of which 155MW was under construction.  Read more

Lack of new capacity impacts First Solar?s market share position, says IMS Research

The rapid capacity expansions by First Solar saw the CdTe thin-film leader scale the PV module rankings to become the number one shipper in 2009. Although another aggressive phase of expansions have been announced the lack of new capacity in 2010 compared to rivals, particularly from Suntech and JA Solar means First Solar has fallen to third largest module manufacturer in the third quarter, according to IMS Research.
