SunPower sold out for 2011: project pipeline stands at 5GW

Despite an ongoing ramp of its Malaysia-based Fab 3 cell production plant that will increase its megawatt production by 65% in 2011, Tom Werner, CEO of SunPower noted in its third quarter financial conference call that demand for its products exceeded supply both in the second-half of this year but also in 2011. The leading high-efficiency solar module manufacturer and project developer posted revenue of US$554 million, up 41% over the second quarter of 2010, and an increase of 19% compared to the third quarter of 2009. SunPower expects revenue to reach between US$2.15 billion and US$2.25 billion in 2010. Its PV project pipeline now stood at 5GW, up from 4GW last year. Read more

Q-Cells to build 150MW module plant in Germany

Although Q-Cells has partnered with a range of PV module manufacturers to fabricate its modules using its own solar cells, Q-Cells CEO, Nedim Cen said in a conference call with financial analysts, to cover third quarter results that it is building a 150MW module plant in Thalheim, Germany that will be dedicated to its ‘Q.PRO’ branded modules. Q-Cells hit by module quality issues: expanding projects and sales internationally

Delayed module shipments in connection with quality issues at suppliers dogged Q-Cells in the third quarter, though sales increased 20% on the previous quarter to reach €402 million. The company reported total production volumes for solar cells and thin-film solar modules at 305MW, an increase of 28% on the second quarter. However, the quality issues saw shipments of crystalline modules fall by nearly half to 26MW, compared 44MW in the second quarter. Q-Cells said that the major financial restructuring of the company had been completed. Read more


SMA Solar sales top ?626.7 million: 5.7GW of inverter output sold in the first nine months

Solar inverter market leader, SMA Solar almost reached its production capacity limit as semiconductor component supply constraints eased. Third quarter sales reached a record €626.7 million and totalled €1.44 billion for the first nine months of the year. SMA reiterated that it still expects newly installed PV power of up to 17GW in 2010 with German solar installations running at about 5.3GW through the end of September. Read more

Project Focus: SDG&E signs 25-year PPA with CSolar for 130MW solar project in Imperial County

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) agreed to a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with CSolar Development, a subsidiary of Tenaska Solar ventures, for the development of up to 130MW of solar PV power.  A proposed 900-acre site in Imperial County, called “Imperial Solar Energy Center South”, will hold the solar project, which is expected to reach completion in 2014. The 130MW project will use the 120-mile Sunrise Powerlink, presumed to reach completion in 2012, to deliver the energy produced at the facility to customers in the SDG&E service territory. A stealthy start-up, Alinement B.V. (ABV), based in the Netherlands has bold plans to become a major integrated PV module manufacturer in Europe. In a tri-party Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), using advanced hetero-junction cell technology and turnkey manufacturing lines from Roth & Rau and module manufacturing technology from Day4 Energy. ABV is planning to start production in the first quarter of 2012 with a capacity of 80MW. It also cliams to have plans to increase production to 500MW at a single location in the Netherlands as well as 2.5GW globally. The site for the integrated wafer/cell/module plant was not disclosed.
